Tallinn Fringe Festival sets records

This year’s Tallinn Fringe Festival, held from August 18 to September 18, shattered records, attracting more visitors and featuring a broader range of performances than ever before. Over the course of five weeks, audiences in Tallinn enjoyed a diverse cultural programme that spanned burlesque, theatre, comedy, music, poetry, dance, and stand-up performances from both local and international artists.

For the first time in the festival’s history, the programme surpassed 100 performers, boasting 160 acts from over 20 countries. In total, there were 209 performances across 17 different venues throughout the city, drawing a record-breaking 9,200 visitors.

One of the festival’s major attractions was its popular street programme, held for the second time in Tallinn’s Town Hall Square. World-class artists took centre stage, including Ireland’s revolutionary circus collective Tumble Circus, the improvisational duo Bill and Fred with their “elderly lady” act, and the clown Shiva Grigs with the performance “Pigeon Chaser.” The street programme alone attracted 4,200 visitors—700 more than last year, reflecting the growing appeal of the festival’s open-air shows.

Reflecting on the festival’s impact, artist and spokesperson Kaisa Ling noted, “This year, I could really feel how the Fringe brought life to Tallinn. There was always somewhere to go, friends waiting, or someone who had just experienced something surprising. That’s exactly what the Fringe is about—it democratises culture, offering artists the freedom to perform and audiences the chance to experience something new. Whether people enjoy it or not, it gives them something to talk about.”

Following the model of the world’s largest cultural event, the Edinburgh Fringe, Tallinn Fringe is a self-curated festival with no formal organising committee. Artists of all types are welcome to participate, making it a truly open platform for creative expression.

The Tallinn Fringe Festival will return from August 18 to September 18, 2025.
