July is France month at Tallinn Botanic Gardens

 

Starting in the spring, the Tallinn Botanic Gardens has had a specific country of focus each month. July is the turn of France. In collaboration with the French Embassy, excursions, lectures, workshops, exhibitions and other exciting events have been organized at the botanic gardens during the month of July.

In July, the French Embassy will present an exhibition of digital environmental footprints in the Tallinn Botanic Garden’s Palm House, inviting visitors to journey along the paths of digital technology’s environmental effects. The exhibition is in Estonian and English.

On July 12 at 4 pm, a documentary about Burgundy wines, “L’âme du vin” (Soul of Wine) will be screened. The film is in French, with English subtitles. You can register for the screening here.   

In summer, drinking rosé wines is very common in France. It is fresh and fruity and perfect for picnics and barbecues. On July 12 at 6 pm, wine expert Karl-Erik Laanet will present some wines for tasting and talk about rosé wine culture, regions and how to enjoy them. Entrance to the wine workshop is 25 euros. Registration can be made by emailing: cours@ife.ee.

Tours to learn about French plants in the Botanic Gardens will take place on July 16, 23 and 30 at 12 noon, guided by botanist Urmas Laansoo. You can go on a tour with a standard entrance ticket to the botanical garden. However, prior registration is required. You can register here

On July 19, at 3:30 pm, a public lecture by Aurèle Toussaint, a French macroecology researcher at the University of Tartu, will be held. The lecture, entitled “Why protect endangered species?”, will cover the challenges facing scientists to understand and prevent the consequences of the biodiversity crisis, which could see more than 1 million species become extinct this century. On July 19, at 4:30 pm, there will be a discussion on “The Future of Food”. Researchers Nathalie Bolduc and Petri-Jaan Lahtvee will discuss one of the burning issues of today as well as the solutions to feed the world’s growing population. You can register here.  

On July 25, the workshop “Climate Fresk” will be held from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm for adults and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm for children. In just three hours, it is possible to get acquainted with the scientific basis of the causes of climate change. You can register for the workshops here.  

Lastly, on July 31, a petanque tournament will be held in the open field of the botanic gardens.

Tallinn Botanic Gardens are open every day from 10 am to 7 pm.
