Tallinn Testing New Electric Trolleybusses

From Monday the 1st of November 2021 residents and visitors to Tallinn will be able to ride a new bi-articulated trolleybus that is able to disconnect from its overhead powerlines and run on battery power for up to 8km.

The Solaris Trollino 24 MetroStyle trolleybus is capable of holding up to 200 passengers. This is 4 times as many as the current trolleybusses. Making it an extremely useful solution during peak travel times, and a possible alternative to new tram routes.

However, the biggest benefit of the trolleybus is the ability to disconnect and reconnect to the overhead powerlines. This means that the bus can be used on routes not totally covered by the powerline network.

Another benefit of being able to disconnect and reconnect from the powerline network comes at complicated junctions, where the current busses have to wait, often for extend periods. This also means that the bus can overtake existing slower trolleybuses. Making it a good choice for express routes with fewer stops.

The Solaris Trollino 24 MetroStyle trolleybus will run on Trolley Line 1 until the start of December. Travel for Tallinn city residents with a green card is free. Visitors can also purchase tickets on the bus by credit or debit card.
