New Spas for Eastern Estonia, Viljandi and Tallinn

Confidence in spa resorts, sauna centres and spa hotels remains strong within Estonia’s tourism sector. This can be seen in the growing number of projects currently under construction or nearing completion across the country. Here is an overview of the newest spa developments.

On the northern shore of Lake Peipus in Eastern Estonia, beside Alutaguse National Park, the Kurro nature spa hotel will open on 24 August.

Offering year-round luxury and tranquillity in nature, the hotel includes 97 rooms, eight saunas, and several pools of varying temperatures. The spa area is divided into the publicly accessible Vool, or “Flow” section, and the adults-only Hõõg ja Tuhk, or “Ember Glow and Ash” area dedicated to silence and relaxation for guests aged 16 and above. Kurro will also provide wellness and beauty treatments. The restaurant menu has been created by Angelica Udeküll, internationally recognised as one of Estonia’s most respected female chefs, and known for leading the Wicca restaurant at the Laulasmaa spa hotel.

Since autumn 2021, the former Viljandi manor main building has housed Schloss Fellin, a combination of a luxurious 17-room boutique hotel and a small wellness spa with saunas and a pool. Last week, however, a topping-out ceremony was held for a much larger spa and conference hotel currently under construction on the shore of Lake Viljandi.

Scheduled to open in autumn 2027, the four-storey hotel will include 150 rooms with balconies, an eight-lane swimming pool, sauna and spa facilities, a restaurant, and conference spaces of various sizes. Architecturally, the spa hotel will consist of two connected cylindrical buildings. The project is led by businessman Oleg Gross, owner of the Grossi grocery store chain in Estonia.

According to a report published today by Estonian Public Broadcasting ERR, Spa Tours, which already operates spas in Viimsi, Saaremaa, Narva-Jõesuu, and Tallinn’s Õismäe district, is investing approximately 10 million euros into a new sauna and spa centre in the Lasnamäe district of Tallinn.

Following an agreement with the city council, the two-storey spa complex is planned for completion by the end of 2028 between Lasnamäe Centrum and Mustakivi shopping centres, at the intersection of Mustakivi and Laagna roads. The building has been designed by the Danish architectural company Atelier Lorentzen Langkilde ApS.

In February, we reported on two new spa hotels planned for the beaches of Pärnu, one of which is already visibly rising skyward as construction continues throughout the summer. In addition to Lasnamäe, Tallinn is also expected to gain a new adults-only 18+ spa in the Telliskivi area, and another spa project within the Ülemiste City office district by the end of 2028.
