Praise for Local

Praise for Local

Leib Resto ja Aed is the dream of sommelier Kristjan Peäske and chef Janno Lepik, two friends turned restaurateurs.

Their love for good food and good wine can be seen in the restaurant’s seasonal menus, and the ever-changing wine list. Located in the Old Scottish Club in Tallinn’s Old Town, Leib offer local casual dining both in summer and in winter.

Leib has much to celebrate this year. Their sommeliers have been outstanding. Ketri Leis won best young sommelier in the Baltics and came in second place in the Estonian competition. Oskar Pihlik won best beer sommelier in Estonia. The restaurant won seventh place among Estonia’s 50 Best Restaurants and made it into the White Guide Nordic, essentially the Michelin Guide of Northern Europe.

We sat down to a warming lunch at Leib with co-owner Kristjan Peäske. “Our guests may not realise that almost everything on our menu is organic and everything is locally sourced”, explains Kristjan. All of Leib’s raw ingredients come from local farms and producers. We tried the creamy jerusalem artichoke soup; the smooth earthy soup was complemented by a glass of crisp Rosé Zweigelt. The soup is a meal in itself, but a main course was calling. An oven baked Siberian sturgeon fillet answered that call, served with fennel, semi-dried tomatoes and a creamy sauce.

The work doesn’t stop at Leib. In February they closed their doors to renovate and renew the interior of the restaurant. While we haven’t seen the results yet, Leib awaits visitors at the beginning of March with a fresh interior and open arms.
