Most people have no idea that this event even exists in Estonia, but drag racing is a real thing! What’s more, this event just south of Haapsalu, in Lääne County, on 20–21 June is merely the first stage of a five-stage series of racing that will conclude in August. Next weekend will have two full days of drag racing qualification rounds, eliminations, and awards. If you’re an enthusiast of customised cars, this event is for you.
Officially titled “Ghost Performance Season Opening”, or stage one, this drag racing weekend will take place in the abandoned military airfield called Kiltsi, just a few minutes southwest of Haapsalu along the road to the Rohuküla ferry port to the island of Hiiumaa. There is ample space for camping, as well as caravan camping, and electricity is available.
Gates open in the morning, and races will take place throughout the day. In the evening, at 20:00, the very popular Estonian band Traffic will have a concert, followed by DJ sets until midnight. Food and drink are available on site, and yes, this is a family-friendly event. However, you might want to consider ear plugs for the little ones. Not because of the music of course, but because of the cars.
Under the auspices of the Estonian Autosport Union, or EAL, the Ghost Performance Season Opening is the first of five events this summer. The next is only a couple weeks later, 4–5 July, Ghost Performance SummerFest, also in Kiltsi. 25 July will see Speedest Glassdrive Nightrace, this time at the Ülenurme Airfield just south of Tartu. Next will be on 15–16 August, the Ghost Performance August Meet, once more back in Kiltsi. And finally, the Ghost Performance Finals & Muinastulede Möll, or ancient bonfire festival, on 29–30 August, also in Kiltsi.
Tickets to next weekend’s event are available here.
