Chrome Shine and the Rumble of V8s at the Song Festival Grounds

May Day, or 1 May, has in Estonia become a traditional opening day of the season for American car enthusiasts. This year, the opening will be celebrated on a larger scale, with an event filling the entire Tallinn Song Festival Grounds from 10:00 to 18:00.

More than 500 newer and older American cars are expected to arrive as part of a joint cruise, gathering along the asphalt walkways and park areas of the grounds. These include original-condition vehicles, carefully restored classics, and customised show cars. Represented are classics from different eras and body styles, muscle cars, pickup models, sports and drag racing cars, off-roaders, and much more. Alongside the technology and gleaming chrome, the real stars of the day are the people—enthusiasts and admirers who come together to see what others have built, repaired, or acquired over the winter.

Rockabilly-style live bands will raise the atmosphere throughout the day. At 11:00 and 13:00, the four-member band Rusty Roaders will perform on the programme stage; their double bassist Erkki Joon has himself built a stylish hot rod beauty from a 1930 Ford Model A. At 15:00 and 16:30, Boogie Company will take the stage, whose frontman Andres Kasesalu keeps—and sometimes drives—a 1957 Studebaker Nighthawk.

Inside the Song Festival Grounds buildings, visitors can explore exhibitions of special vehicles, customised bicycles, and automotive paintwork, buy clothing and memorabilia related to American car culture, get a themed tattoo, or admire the craftsmanship of Ingmar Noorlaid, who builds scale models of cars and motorcycles.

The motorsport highlight of the day takes place on the slopes of the grounds, featuring a race of crosskart cars: vehicles that combine elements of rallycross and karting, and are also well known in Finland. This round, run in a rally sprint format starting at 10:30, is part of the Estonian championship series. Its most notable participant is Martin Järveoja, known worldwide as the co-driver of Ott Tänak and, for the second year running, for telling Chuck Norris jokes around the world.

You can arrive at the May Day American car event in Tallinn on foot, with tickets costing €12.50 in advance online or €15 at the gate. True fans can purchase a car ticket at the same price, which grants entry and parking at the grounds with an American car. The ticket is valid for one car and up to two people. Children under 12 enter free when accompanied by an adult. More information and the day’s schedule are available here.

Examples of other themed events for the upcoming season in Estonia include a cruising drive in and around Tartu on Saturday 23 May starting at 10:00. The route passes through Rõngu, Rannu, and Puhja before returning to Tartu and visiting entrepreneur Neinar Seli’s private car museum, which features nearly 200 mostly Soviet-era four- and two-wheeled vehicles. More information is available here. The best-known and indirectly longest-running event is the American Beauty Summer Meet, held from 10–12 July in the courtyard of Haapsalu Castle, continuing the tradition of the American Beauty Car Show that ran from the early 2000s until the summer before last.
