April Fool’s Day Three Days Earlier This Year

Everyone’s favourite day has been rescheduled to take place three days earlier than planned due to the current geopolitical situation. With this in mind, The Baltic Guide is sad to announce that Wednesday’s Auvere Drone Race has been canceled this year because one of the participants was practising on the actual race course without authorisation, according to Estonian Defence Forces.

As previously reported by The Baltic Guide in January, Saul Hudson, known professionally as Slash of Guns N’ Roses, will be in Tallinn this week filming a documentary exploring his Estonian heritage. He has agreed to perform a free concert in Politsei Park on Wednesday beginning at 19:00. Total road closures to allow for extra standing room for audiences are expected from Laagna tee all the way to Paldiski maantee.

Rail Baltica have announced that beginning on Wednesday morning at 9:00, they will finally start selling advance tickets for their maiden train voyage to Warsaw, which will take place in 2040 or within the ten following years. The planned route will originate in Tallinn, with stops in Pärnu, Riga, Kaunas, and bureaucracy along the way. Tickets are available here.

The long-awaited grand opening of Walmart’s first supercentre in Europe will take place on Wednesday in the former premises of IKEA, just south of Tallinn. Included in the building will be a Taco Bell, a Pizza Hut, and the first Starbucks in the Baltics. “Street food has been a massive trend in Estonia for years now,” says Taco Bell Eesti marketing director Eeva Pruun. “What better way to celebrate food that belongs on the street than by selling it next to a highway?” Due to the expected long lines, Airbnb are offering free accommodations in the parking lot for a discounted surge fee of only three times the normal rate.

People across the Nordics have recently been enjoying the effects of an unusually powerful solar storm and the ensuing widespread Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, visible as far south as Latvia. On Wednesday, however, between approximately noon and 14:00 in the afternoon, these gorgeous displays from Earth’s magnetosphere are forecast to be visible in broad daylight for the first time in recorded history, but only from the general vicinity of Tallinn’s famed Linnahall, by the passenger ports.

Also Wednesday, the first annual Great Estonian Staring Contest will take place in the newly opened Peeglikeskus, or Mirror Mall. In celebration of national heritage and culture, Estonians will be able to compete against themselves to see who can go the longest without blinking, or smiling.

As the headline for this article mentions, April Fool’s Day this year is scheduled to take place three days earlier than usual, meaning tomorrow. At 15:00 on Sunday, 29 March, a flash mob will take place in Tammssaare Park, just across the street from the Old Town. More information about this event is available here.
