Swedish photographer Emilia Bergmark-Jiménez has spent over three years documenting intimate moments related to childbirth, and the beginning of new life. The exhibition “To Be Born and to Give Birth” portrays women in the act of giving birth, and reflects on what it means to become human and to enter the world as a new individual. The photographs are accompanied by texts written by the artist, in which she explores the memories, emotions, and questions evoked by the project.
The project began with a work assignment in which she was invited to document a birth. This experience brought back memories of her own childbirth, and led her to examine what it is like to be present at the moment when life begins, and when the birthing person seemingly disappears to make space for a new existence.
The exhibition is curated by Sofia Liljergren from Fotografiska Stockholm, and Maarja Loorents of Fotografiska Tallinn, along with the local team. It is part of a broader program titled “Swedish Birth”.
The exhibition will be open at Fotografiska Tallinn from 10 October, 2025, to 15 February, 2026. On the opening night, 9 October, an English-language discussion event will take place, where the artist will talk about her work, and answer questions from the audience. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
