Take Your Pet to a Museum

Sometimes your parents take you to a museum, sometimes you take your parents to a museum, but on this one special occasion, you can take your pet to a museum! For those who consider their kids as their pets, you can take both. The Estonian Agricultural Museum in Tartu invites visitors young and old, furry and not so furry, to a one-of-a-kind event next Saturday: the Pet Festival!

This is a family event, but pets are not required for entry. Neither are children. Maybe you just want to see everyone else’s pets. While most visitors will likely bring dogs, you can rest assured that you’ll see at least one cat being dragged across the floor on a leash by an enthusiastic owner, and maybe even a parrot perched on someone’s shoulder. The poster for the event shows a llama as well. You never know what kinds of pets people have in their backyards in Estonia. Maybe that’s why they like tall hedges.

The day will start at 11:00, where visitors can see the animals of the museum. There will also be small classes for pet health, such as how to recognise symptoms of various parasites. Kids need to know these things, too, so they can learn how to take care of animals.

Special visitors from the Uhti Minizoo will make an appearance, as will a contingent of police dogs, so make sure you wash your clothes after Friday night. There will also be a petting zoo with small animals for children to get to know, and kiddos can make toys for their doggos in the arts and crafts area. Pony rides are also available, as well as special pet demonstrations.

The event will conclude at 15:00 with an awards ceremony for the people’s favourite pets. And perhaps even the pets’ favourite pets. This does not, however, mean that there will be food available at the event.

More information is available in English here, and tickets can be purchased at the door, or in advance here.
