Live in Tallinn: Jeff Mills and Tomorrow Comes The Harvest

Detroit’s electronic music pioneer Jeff Mills, French keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary and Indian tabla player Prabhu Edouard will perform at Salme Cultural Centre on November 30, presenting their live project Tomorrow Comes The Harvest. The concert will merge jazz improvisation and techno, focusing on the musical connections between past influences and contemporary sounds. Special guests for the event include Estonian musician Maarja Nuut and Swiss drummer Nicolas Stocker.

Jeff Mills, a key figure in Detroit’s Underground Resistance collective, left the group in the early 90s to pursue a solo career. Mills has built his reputation by drawing inspiration from science fiction and Afrofuturism, working on projects such as soundtracks for A Trip to the Moon and radio adaptations of The Outer Limits in collaboration with NASA.

Tomorrow Comes The Harvest was initiated in 2016 with the late Tony Allen, one of the founders of Afrobeat. The concept behind the project was to focus on spontaneous improvisation, with pre-planning, allowing the musicians to respond to each other’s ideas in real time. Following Allen’s death in 2020, Mills continued the project with tabla player Prabhu Edouard and keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary, who had been involved since the beginning. The result of this collaboration is the new live album Evolution, released on Axis Records, which reflects the group’s exploration of both jazz and techno through improvisation.

The performance in Tallinn is part of the ongoing Tomorrow Comes The Harvest European tour, which has included performances at venues such as London’s Barbican Centre, Berlin’s Theater des Westens, and Dublin’s National Concert Hall. The concert in Tallinn will feature a combination of intricate rhythms, experimental sound, and improvisation, which offer a fresh approach to both jazz and electronic music.
