2024 Best mulled wines testedThe test was initially focused on colour.

This year’s glögi or mulled wine test took place in the medieval atmosphere of Olde Hansa, a restaurant perfect for hosting events and programmes for larger groups. A nine-member Estonian-Finnish panel conducted a blind tasting of five different mulled wines from Prisma’s local offerings, as well as mulled wine from III Draakon, located on Tallinn’s Town Hall Square. In Estonian, the two terms glögg and hõõgvein are used interchangeably for mulled wine.

The wines were rated on colour, aroma, taste, and aftertaste, with a maximum possible score of 180 points. A clear winner emerged: Lignell & Piispanen’s Loimu 2024, which scored 146 points. This mulled wine features a blend of cloudberry, chokeberry, and plum flavours.

The evaluation was taken with all seriousness.
The wine was heated to about +50°C.

Second place went to Wõlu Glögi, a traditional recipe that has been a local favourite for years and was also awarded best by the public at Estonia’s autumn food fair.

In third place was III Draakon’s mulled wine, an excellent choice to enjoy on Town Hall Square during a visit to the Christmas Market.

The fourth-place finisher, Blossa 24 Edinburgh, stood out for its unique colour and flavour. Its smoky notes come from the addition of whisky, offering a distinct twist on the classic mulled wine profile.
