Tartu’s Famous Spring Fair Returns

The Spring Fair in Tartu, or Kevadlaat, is a large annual outdoor market event that brings together hundreds of traders, producers, and visitors in the city centre of Tartu. Scheduled for 9 May 2026 from 10:00 to 16:00, the fair is a free, public event.

The event takes place across a wide central area of Tartu, stretching from the Town Hall Square through Küüni Street, to the riverside along the Emajõgi River, as well as the market area. This extensive layout allows for a large number of participants while ensuring accessibility and comfort for visitors. It’s also a great way to see the beautiful downtown area!

A key feature of the Spring Fair is its scale and diversity. The event typically hosts more than 300 vendors, including craft traders, small-scale producers, and food sellers. Visitors can explore a broad selection of goods, ranging from handicrafts and locally made products to gardening items such as plants and seedlings. Foods on sale are also a central part of the experience, providing a variety of options for attendees throughout the day.

Beyond shopping, the fair is designed as a social and cultural gathering that showcases local creativity and entrepreneurship. By bringing together producers and consumers in a shared public space, the event supports small businesses and highlights regional products. The setting along the Emajõgi riverbanks also reflects the city’s aim to activate and enhance this central urban area through community-oriented events. Recent years have seen a lot of development along the riverside, including cafés, restaurants, sculptures, and inviting promenades.

Overall, the Spring Fair serves as a seasonal celebration marking the arrival of spring in Tartu. It combines commerce, community, and culture in a single event, offering both residents and visitors an opportunity to experience local life, discover regional products, and enjoy the atmosphere of a large open-air market in the heart of the city. It also smells pretty good!
