26.09–05.10 STF 2024: Independent Dance Festival, Telliskivi, Tallinn

The Independent Dance Festival brings together different dance communities and audiences to explore the transformative power of dance through contemporary performances. This year’s event will highlight critical social issues such as burnout, beauty standards, and aging, while blending tradition with modernity by incorporating technology. Featuring over 20 performances, including works by Ukrainian artists and Icelandic dance students, the festival will showcase innovative choreography and offer thought-provoking discussions. The festival also includes dance workshops and panel discussions.

 

30.09 Light Festival 10: Arrival, Tartu

The Light Festival, celebrating its 10th year, highlights the significance of light and light-based technologies in everyday life and societal development. Originating from a collaboration between Nõo Municipality and Tartu Observatory, this year’s festival explores space and technology, paying tribute to NASA’s Artemis III lunar mission. The event offers everything from large-scale light installations to space-themed workshops, performances, and community activities.

 

01.10 International Music Day, Tallinn

International Music Day will see free music performances all across Estonia. The event encourages people to recognise the significance of music in our daily lives. One highlight of the festival will be a concert by the ÖÖ32 Quartet at TV Tower in Tallinn, The unique musical experience titled “Journey to the Nordic Islands,” will take the audience on a sonic exploration of ancient Nordic mythology and folk traditions. The 50-minute performance mixes classical string instruments with modern interpretations, offering a journey through centuries of wisdom. Admission is free, but tickets to some events must be reserved in advance.

 

01–05.10 Viljandi Heritage Festival, around Viljandi

Viljandi, a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Arts, hosts a festival exploring how traditional knowledge and folklore can address modern economic and environmental challenges. The event combines heritage and street art, exhibitions in various city venues and live performances. It begins with an international conference on heritage and sustainability, followed by masterclasses for professionals. The festival culminates in a cultural celebration, offering workshops, performances, and the chance to explore Estonia’s rich folk traditions.

 

01.10–30.11 Tallinn Architecture Biennale, around Tallinn

The 7th Tallinn Architecture Biennale entitled “Resources For a Future”, will take place at various venues around the city. The biennale will address vital architectural principles for future development, focusing on optimising resources and enhancing building longevity. The festival is divided into three key sections: “Social Intelligence,” which examines the role of social urbanism; “Building Concept,” focusing on innovative architectural tools; and “Material Formation,” which explores the evolution of material culture in architecture. The Biennale programme includes workshops, panels, seminars, and the popular Open House Tallinn, targeting both professionals and the general public.

 

02–03.10 III Estonian Zero Waste Conference, Estonian University of Life Sciences, Tartu

The III Estonian Zero Waste Conference, titled “Circular Systems are a Reality,” will focus on practical, existing zero waste solutions across Europe. The conference highlights the real-world application of zero waste practices, showcasing successful examples from various cities. As Tartu is the European Capital of Culture 2024, the conference will emphasise environmentally friendly event management.

 

04.10 Friday Night Run, Tartu

The Friday Night Run will kick off the Tartu City Marathon program with a lively 4 km evening run through the historic old town of Tartu. Starting at 9 pm, this event invites participants of all abilities to enjoy a leisurely run, with the option to time their performance or simply run for fun.

 

04–06.10 Tallinn International Horse Show, Unibet Arena, Tallinn

The Tallinn International Horse Show features a spectacular leg of the Show Jumping World Cup alongside various equestrian competitions. Visitors can also enjoy a range of performances that provide musical entertainment and visual delights for both young and old. The three-day event is set to attract thousands of spectators.

 

04–13.10 Foodlover Restaurant Week, Around Estonia

Foodlover Restaurants Week invites culinary enthusiasts to explore the finest dining experiences in Estonia at budget-friendly prices. Over ten days, a selection of top restaurants will welcome food lovers, providing a unique opportunity to savour delectable dishes and memorable culinary delights. The fixed menus feature a mix of local specialties and international flavours. Diners can also enjoy the option of pairing their meals with various beverages to enhance their dining experience and create the perfect flavour combinations.

 

05.10 13th Tartu City Marathon, Tartu

Renowned for its thrilling course, the Tartu City Marathon takes participants through the city’s most cherished locations, with the entire 42 km route completed in one lap, ensuring each kilometre offers a fresh experience. Runners can also choose shorter distances too including the half-marathon and 10 km, there will also be children’s races.
