A new bike-sharing service has launched in Tallinn

On Monday, August 19, Rekola Bikesharing, a Czech company, launched a new bike rental service in Tallinn, introducing 200 uniquely named bicycles to the city’s streets. The eye-catching pink bikes will be available around the clock at over 180 designated bike parking spaces, providing both residents and visitors with an affordable way to navigate the city.

These three-speed mechanical bikes are equipped with a practical basket, making city travel convenient and comfortable. Rental costs are 1.25 euros for every 30 minutes or 9 euros per month for unlimited usage. To access the service, users must download the Rekola Bikesharing app, which is available on the App Store and Google Play.

While you can ride the bikes anywhere, they must be returned to the designated parking spaces listed in the app, which are located in the city centre, Kalamaja, Noblessner, the bus station, airport, and Ülemiste.

Vítek Ježek, founder and CEO of Rekola Bikesharing, is confident there is a demand for a low-cost bike rental service in Tallinn. “Our experience in the Czech Republic and Slovakia shows that mechanical bikes, electric bikes, and electric scooters don’t compete with each other; instead, they offer different options for different needs. Tallinn is a rapidly developing city, increasingly embracing green alternatives. We are thrilled that our pink bikes will contribute to the city’s mobility options,” said Ježek.

Kristjan Järvan, Deputy Mayor of Tallinn, also expressed his satisfaction with Rekola Bikesharing’s arrival in the city. “The Tallinn City Government aims to launch a bike rental system across the metropolitan area, and Rekola’s plans align perfectly with our objectives. I’m particularly pleased that Rekola Bikesharing is launching its service in central Tallinn without requiring financial support from the city, operating independently as a private company should,” said Järvan.

Founded in 2013 in the Czech Republic, Rekola Bikesharing is dedicated to providing sustainable and affordable transportation solutions. The company originally started with recycled bikes donated by individuals, which inspired the name “Rekola” – derived from “re” (recycled) and “kola” (bike in Czech). In Tallinn, only new bikes are available, but each one still bears the company’s unique name.
