The enchanting views of Ida-Virumaa

Text and photos Timo Huttunen

The enchanting views of Ida-VirumaaFrom the "Five-Kroon" viewing platform, you can see the Ivangorod fortress in Russia, which is on the other side of the Narva River.

Sillamäe’s beautiful beach promenade

A promenade has been built on Sillamäe’s shore, which connects the historic city centre and the beach. In the city’s central square, there is a great view of the staircase, the boulevard, and the beach. The staircase and Sea Boulevard (Mere puistee) are one of Sillamäe’s most important attractions and symbols. The boulevard now leads directly to the renewed beach promenade. At the end of the boulevard is a historic gazebo and viewing platform, which form a beautiful architectural ensemble by the sea.

Among other things, a swimming beach, a seven-meter-high observation tower, sports fields, children’s playgrounds, and an outdoor gym have been built in connection with the beach promenade. There are also regular sports and cultural events held along the promenade.

The promenade connects Sillamäe’s city centre with its beach.

Narva’s new “Five-Kroon” viewing platform

The reason for the viewing platform’s name is that it is the same as the one depicted on the five-kroon banknote that was used in Estonia between 1992 and 2011. From the platform, you can see, Narva Castle, the Narva River, and the Ivangorod Fortress on the Russian side. There is a relief of the banknote on a stone wall. From the viewing platform, you can take the stairs down to a recreation area and the river promenade.

The promenade along the Narva river bank has also been renovated and expanded as has Narva castle, which has great views over the river and Russia from the Tall Hermann Tower.
