The iconic Kosmos cinema in Tallinn will close its doors on Sunday 20 March, according to current operator Cinamon cinema. At present, no other cinema chain or independent cinema has expressed an interest in taking over the historic building.
According to the CEO of Cinamon cinema Andac Bagioglu, “Although the building is easily accessible, there are no support companies around it to realize the full experience of going to the cinema. The behaviour of cinema-goers is looking for additional entertainment in addition to watching a movie. “
When the cinema reopened in 2014, it boasted the IMAX format and a restaurant. However, “looking at the map, it may seem that the space is located in the city center, but logistically it is difficult to reach customers arriving by car due to parking restrictions in the city center,” Bagioglu explained.
At present, there is no knowledge of any of the major cinema chain taking over the building. Cinema Artis refused the opportunity to use the building, and Forum Cinema have confirmed they do not want to use it either.
The Kosmos cinema first opened its doors in 1964 and is a heritage-listed building. Cinamon have no plans to close their cinema in T1 mall in Tallinn.
