Põltsamaa, which has been producing well-known and beloved berry and fruit wines in Estonia for more than a hundred years, is set to stop producing wines and alcoholic mulled wine next year. According to a report by broadcaster ERR.
“We have decided to make and sell wines and mulled wine until the end of 2023. The main reason we are closing down our small alcohol business is our desire to focus on Põltsamaa’s main business, i.e. the production of food and non-alcoholic beverages, ”said Madeleine Tults, Communications Director of Orkla Eesti AS, which owns Põltsamaa.
According to Tults, the production of non-alcoholic mulled wine is planned to continue in the future. Tults stated that there is very strong competition in the Estonian alcohol market and that in order to be profitable, the company must focus all its efforts on the production and marketing of alcoholic beverages.
According to Tults, it must also be borne in mind that Põltsamaa’s wine production equipment is old and that modernization would require substantial investment. “Because of the wine history of the Põltsamaa factory, we will keep the brand, and we are not going to sell it,” Tults said.
