11 pm curfew on entertainment venues to be lifted temporarily for New Year

In a statement from Jaak Aab, Minister of Public Administration, the government has decided to lift the 11 pm curfew on entertainment venues temporarily for New Year. The exemption will last from the evening of December 31 until 6 am on January 2.

This exemption means that bars, restaurants, nightclubs and other entertaintment venues will be able to open beyond 11 pm on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. To enter these establishments, customers will still need to show proof of vaccination or infection in the past 6 months as well as an ID document, in line with current covid regulations.

Although the number of daily new coronavirus infections has stablised in Estonia, because the new Omicron strain is already spreading in the country, the government has been advised by the health board not to lift the 11 pm curfew permanently at the moment.

Prime Minister Kaja Kallas explained, “This exemption does not mean the coronavirus will not spread on those two nights. I call on everyone who decides to spend New Year’s Eve at a public place to act responsibly to protect themselves and others. Getting a booster dose is very important, because studies show it increases protection against the Omicron strain significantly”.
