Ticket prices for Hiiumaa and Saaremaa ferries to rise from March 1

Text Mark Taylor

Ticket prices for Hiiumaa and Saaremaa ferries to rise from March 1Saarenmaalla riittää elämyksiä koko vuodeksi.

The cost of ferry tickets between the mainland and the islands of Hiiumaa and Saaremaa are set to increase from March 1. This price rise comes amid claims that local officials on the islands have been left out of the decision-making process.

From March 1, the cost of passenger tickets on the Saaremaa route will rise by €1.29 to €4.29, while the price for a car will rise from €3.60 to €12.00. On the Hiiumaa route, prices will rise by the same proportion. With passenger tickets rising €1.46 to €4.86, and the cost of a car by €4.29 to €14.29.

The price rises were first announced by the government back in December, and were set to take effect on February 1. However,  these were delayed in early January to give time for the mayors of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa to review these plans and submit their own proposals.

In an interview with ERR, the mayor of Hiiumaa, Hergo Tasuja, explained that the government had left local stakeholders out of the descision-making process and proceeded with the price rises despite certain processes not taking place.

At the time of publishing the press release [announcing the price rises], no impact assessments or a final draft of the regulation had been submitted. Answers to questions sent by the business associations have not been answered,” Tasuja stated.

The majors of the islands of Hiiumaa, Saaremaa, and Muhu had proposed the price rises to take effect from January 1, 2023.

Prices for residents of the islands will remain the same.
