Minu Kallis Keha treatment centre in Tallinn specialises in cryolipolysis, a body contouring technique that uses freezing to eliminate accumulated fat and cellulite. “The dead fat cells are eventually removed from the body through metabolism,” explains Kadi Tetremäe, owner of the treatment centre. So, how does this treatment work in practice?

During the procedure, the suction cups of the device are applied to the targeted area. For instance, when treating the abdomen, two suction cups are typically used. The area is then gradually cooled until it reaches a temperature that fat cells can no longer tolerate.

“The cooling phase lasts about 15 minutes, during which the suction cups lower the temperature to -7 degrees Celsius. Initially, the area being treated will feel a tingling sensation that increases gradually. However, as the skin cools down slowly and the body adapts to the cold, this phase is generally not very painful,” says Liina Normet, co-owner of the clinic.

Cryolipolysis can be performed on different parts of the body.

Once the device has reached the desired temperature of -7 degrees, the suction cups remain in place for an additional half-hour. The duration of the treatment varies depending on the area being treated; for example, cryolipolysis of the abdomen typically takes 45 minutes.

At the end of the procedure, the suction cups are carefully removed from the skin. The area may initially feel numb from the cold but is gently warmed with the hands. Sensation usually returns within an hour, though there may be some soreness the following day, particularly if a large area was treated. Recovery time increases with the size of the treated area.

After cryolipolysis, it’s advisable to rest for about an hour and drink plenty of water. Activities such as sweating, using saunas, or infrared treatments should be avoided for the next four days. However, if you are on holiday, you can still enjoy shopping, dining, and sightseeing.

The treatment is reported to remove up to 30 per cent of the fat cells in the treated area. “For optimal results, the treatment should be repeated after approximately two months,” advises Liina Normet.
