Tallink passenger numbers increased 45% in Q1 2023

Tallink’s passenger numbers increased in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. However, cargo volumes fell.

Tallink transported a total of 1,049,777 passengers in the first quarter of 2023, which was 45.7 percent more than in the first quarter of 2022 when 720,261 passengers were carried on the company’s ferries.

The number of passengers increased the most on the Tallinn-Stockholm route. Where there was an increase of 77 percent compared to the first quarter of 2022. The large rise coming due to travel restrictions in early 2022, which affected the number of passengers on the route.

On the Helsinki-Tallinn route, the number of passengers increased by almost 47 per cent compared to the first quarter of 2022.

This year, the Helsinki-Tallinn route has had more transport capacity, as there are now 3 ships operating on the route: MyStar, Megastar and Star. In 2022, only Megastar and Star operated on the route.

Despite the increased number of passengers, the number of freight units transported on the company’s routes decreased compared to last year. In the first quarter of 2023, the company’s ships transported a total of 86,732 cargo units, which was 14.9 percent less than the previous year.

“It’s great to see the number of passengers continue to grow. More than a million passengers in the first quarter of the year is a very good result. The number of freight units transported, especially on the Finland-Sweden routes, is lower, as we have had less transport capacity”, explained Paavo Nõgene, Tallink Group CEO.
