Viljandi Folk’s International Charm—32 Years Running

Various genres of music have their specific fanbases, for example not everyone likes country music, or heavy metal, but folk music is for everyone. This explains the wildly popular draw of Viljandi’s folk music festival, known internationally and locally as Viljandi Folk. It’s just a staple of the music industry, that simple. When late July comes, everyone goes to Viljandi. This year’s festival is the 32nd in a row.

Viljandi Folk 2025 will take place on eight…eight!…stages, featuring countless artists from more than ten countries, including Mali, Azerbaijan, Catalonia, Ukraine, Scotland, Norway, and of course Estonia. More notable artists will be Duo Ruut, who recently gained international recognition for their performance at Glastonbury, Curly Strings, of Estonian folk music royalty, NOËP, with his “NOËP Goes Folk Vol 2” concert, Trad.Attack!, and many, many more.

Once you’ve bought tickets to the festival, you can enjoy the annual fair, featuring handicrafts, toys for children, and various folk music instruments that you can play throughout the venue. There is also a wide selection of food trucks and beverages. If you stay the night, there are options for camping, glamping, hotels, caravan parking, and tudulas…bedspaces in local school classrooms.

The full programme and more information are available here. The venue for Viljandi Folk will naturally be in the centre of town on the hilltops overlooking Lake Viljandi, among the ruins of the medieval castle. Fun fact: according to legend, the Teutonic Knights might have found the Holy Graille, and their headquarters were in Estonia. The Viljandi Castle ruins were one of their main castles, so it is possible that Viljandi Folk takes place only meters above the fabled Biblical relic.
