Shiro Takatani’s “Tangent” to premiere at Tartu’s Vanemuine theatre

The European premiere of “Tangent,” the latest stage work by renowned Japanese media artist Shiro Takatani, will take place at Vanemuine Theatre in Tartu on June 4 and 5. This is Takatani’s first new stage creation in eight years.

“Tangent” celebrates the 40th anniversary of Dumb Type, the world-renowned multidisciplinary arts collective co-founded by Takatani in 1984. As his first solo performing arts work since “ST/LL” in 2015, “Tangent” explores the liminal space where the extraordinary meets the ordinary, seamlessly blending contrasting elements. This serene and dramatic piece transcends the boundaries between visual and performing arts, exploring the interrelationship of art, science, and technology.

Takatani’s innovative approach has earned him international acclaim. His works have been featured at prestigious venues, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Centre Pompidou, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2022, Dumb Type represented Japan at the Venice Biennale.

Following its world premiere at ROHM Theatre Kyoto in February 2024, “Tangent” is set to be a highlight of Tartu’s 2024 cultural programme. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit here
