Saturday is polar bear day at Tallinn Zoo

On Saturday, February 25, International Polar Bear Day will be celebrated at Tallinn Zoo. Between 11 am and 13:30 pm, you will be able to watch polar bears being fed, listen to exciting stories about encounters with them, and even pet the majestic animal.

From 11 am to 12 p.m., expert Ene Lehtmets will share information about polar bears with those interested. During the event, you can safely pet the polar bear’s fur and even examine the bear’s claws. At 11:30, the polar bears Friida and Raspi will get treats while the zoo’s care advisor Anne Saluneem talks about the species.

From 12 to 1:30 p.m., the following lectures will be held in the polar bear house:

  • Tiit Maran, Tallinn Zoo – Are polar bears really fine?
  • Tiit and Maris Pruuli, Estonian Polar Club – Encounters with polar bears.

At the same time, guests can draw the polar bears under the guidance of Margot Kase.

In addition, during the day, visitors will learn how global warming and the melting of glaciers in the Arctic region affect the habitat and survival of animals living there.

The polar bear is the world’s largest terrestrial predator. Despite its large size, the polar bear is a fast and skilled mover as well as a good swimmer and diver. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), there are currently 19 polar bear populations in the Arctic region, with approximately 26,000 polar bears living in the wild. As a result of global warming, the arctic ice fields which they call home have decreased, as have there opportunities to find food

International Polar Bear Day is celebrated on February 27.
