Estonia produces record amounts of solar and wind energy in August

In August, solar and wind energy producers connected to Elektrilevi’s network had an output of more than 400 megawatts per hour for the very first time. Producers of solar energy connected to the grid produced nearly 50 per cent more power than in August last year. This record production comes at a time when hundreds of applications to connect to the power grid by small energy producers and homeowners are submitted each week.

“August was noteworthy in that the maximum capacity of producers in Elektrilevi’s network for the first time exceeded 400 MW. Windy and sunny weather came together as 402 megawatt-hours per hour was produced on August 11” explained Mihkel Härm the head of Elektrilevi’s distribution grid.

In August, solar plants contributed 372.4 megawatts per hour at their peak. This was up from 339.4 MW in July and more than 50 per cent more than the 234.5 MW produced in August last year.

Small producers, such as individuals with solar panels on their homes connected to Elektrilevi’s grid contributed a total of 85.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of power in the month of August, this was 33 GWh more than in August last year, an increase of over 60 per cent.

According to Härm, this increase in power output comes at a time when more people are choosing to produce energy and connect it to the grid.

“The first weeks of September have again seen a record number of applications to link to the grid. Almost 550 applications have been filed weekly. We are working tirelessly to send out offers,” he added.
