Tallinn City Government issues warning for freezing rain and extremely icy conditions tomorrow

The Tallinn city government has issued a warning for freezing rain tomorrow, 10 December. According to Tallinn Deputy mayor Vladimir Svet, “the freezing rain forecasted for Friday and the weekend, is likely to make city streets very slippery”, making some almost impassable.

But the freezing rain is only one of the issues. Over the next couple of days, the temperature is expected to rise above 0oC during the day, but below freezing at night. Meaning that the large amounts of snow currently on the ground will begin to melt and then refreeze, adding further to the icy and dangerous conditions.

For this reason, the city government has placed its entire fleet of snow clearance contractors to clean Tallinn’s streets of snow, and has urged residents to clear sidewalks outside their properties. In turn, the city government has also asked residents to clear rooftops of snow and icicles because these can pose a serious threat to passers by if they fall onto the street.

Conditions on the roads are also expected to be extremely slippery. Therefore, the Tallinn city government has asked all motorists to be mindful and take the weather conditions into consideration when choosing their speed and distance from other drivers.

The Tallinn Education Department has urged schools to allow students to study from home on Friday, further highlighting the seriousness of the weather expected tomorrow and over the weekend.

The last time Tallinn experienced freezing rain (in February this year), the North Estonian Medical Center (PERH) received a new patient every 2-3 minutes who needed medical assistance after falling.
