Celebrate Halloween at the Song Festival Grounds

Normally the terms “Halloween” and “wonderland” aren’t associated with each other, but that is just what Tallinn’s Song Festival Grounds have managed to create to celebrate this year’s spooky holiday. For the two weeks leading up to Halloween, the public is invited to explore the veritable horrorscape that has popped up at Estonia’s most cherished cultural site. Does that sound bad? It’s supposed to! Because it’s Halloween…
A Horror Zone awaits everyone, full of monsters, ghouls, aliens—the extraterrestrial kind, zombies, and other indescribable monstrosities. Get lost in the terrible labyrinth, scream for help as you frantically search for your friends and family. Or just enjoy the gorgeously spooky light installations in the forest, accompanied by the melodic sounds of a chainsaw.
Halloween, which literally means “All Hallows’ Eve”, or more specifically, the night before All Saints’ Day, isn’t just a meaningless American tradition. Dating back to the 4th century CE in Ancient Rome, it’s a practice used to get rid of all evil before the following holy day. It is celebrated in many, many countries around the world, from Japan to Brazil.
Many in Estonia criticise this holiday for detracting from more local holidays like St Martin’s Day—Mardipäev—and St Catherine’s Day—Kadripäev, both of which involve children dressing in costumes. But if you really think about it, Halloween is one of those rare celebrations that unites almost the entire world. So relax, and get ready to go trick-or-treating at the Song Festival Grounds!
Halloween itself is 31 October, but you can visit the Horror Zone today, until 2 November. Tickets are available on-site, and cost €7 for children, and €12 for adults. These prices won’t kill you, but the festival itself might! More information is available here.
