Legendary Icelandic band Sigur Rós to perform in Tallinn in 2025

The Icelandic post-rock legends Sigur Rós will give two special concerts at the Alexela Concert Hall in Tallinn on September 19 and 20, 2025. The band will present their latest studio album, “Átta,” alongside the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.

Sigur Rós, formed in Reykjavik in 1994, has established itself as one of the most significant and influential bands in contemporary music. With a distinctive sound that blends ambient electronic music, modern classical, and post-rock, their music transcends traditional genre boundaries. The band, featuring lead vocalist and guitarist Jón “Jónsi” Þór Birgisson, is celebrated around the world for its ethereal melodies and emotive soundscapes, often sung in both Icelandic and their invented language, vonlenska.

The upcoming concerts will feature the band’s latest work, “Átta,” released last year after a decade-long hiatus. The album has been described as a minimalist masterpiece, showcasing Sigur Rós’s trademark ability to combine grandeur with intimacy. It was recorded with the London Contemporary Orchestra under the production of Paul Corley, known for his work with artists like Oneohtrix Point Never and Tim Hecker. “Átta” represents a profound exploration of themes surrounding beauty, silence, and introspection, wrapped in lush string arrangements and haunting harmonies.

As Jónsi himself states, “We approach each album as if it were our last. We believe that where there is darkness, there will eventually be light.” This sentiment resonates deeply in their work, especially in light of the global challenges faced today, where themes of climate change and existential reflection loom large.

The collaboration with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra for the concerts will add a unique dimension for concertgoers. The 41-piece orchestra, founded in 1993 by conductor Tõnu Kaljuste, has gained international acclaim for its recordings and performances, including a celebrated rendition of Arvo Pärt‘s “Te Deum.”
