The number of tourists visiting Estonia falls again

According to data released by Statistics Estonia, more than 222,000 tourists stayed at accommodation establishments in the country in November 2023. This was 1 per cent less than in November 2022 and 11 per cent less than in October 2023. There were fewer foreign as well as domestic tourists.

“Nearly 119,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in November. The number of domestic tourists was 3 per cent higher than in 2019 before the pandemic, but 1 per cent lower than in November 2022. Nearly 104,000 foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which is 29 per cent less than in November 2019 and 2 per cent less than in the same month in 2022, noted Helga Laurmaa, a leading Analyst at Statistics Estonia.

The largest share of foreign tourists arrived from Finland (34 per cent), followed by Latvia (19 per cent), the United Kingdom and Lithuania (5 per cent each), and Germany (4 per cent).

Compared with November 2022, there were more tourists from many European countries as well as from countries further away. The number of tourists from Latvia increased by 12 per cent, from the UK by 39 per cent, and from Lithuania by 4 per cent. The number of German tourists remained at the same level as last year. Compared with November 2022, the number of visitors arriving from Asian countries rose by 38 per cent. However, fewer tourists arrived in Estonia from Finland and Sweden.

A total of 76 per cent of foreign visitors stayed in accommodation establishments in Harjumaa, followed by Pärnumaa (10 per cent), Tartumaa (6 per cent), and Ida-Virumaa and Saaremaa (both 2 per cent).

In November, the average cost of a guest night was 46 euros per person, which was 1 euro more than in November 2022 and 7 euros more than in November 2019. The average cost of an overnight stay per person was 50 euros in Lääne-Virumaa, 49 euros in Harjumaa and Tartumaa, 46 euros in Ida-Virumaa, 43 euros in Läänemaa, 38 euros in Saaremaa, and 37 euros in Pärnumaa.
