Tallink transported 5.7 million passengers in 2023

During 2023, Tallink transported a total of 5,705,600 passengers on all of its ferry routes, which was 4.5 per cent more than in 2022 (5,462,085 passengers in 2022). Compared to 2022, the number of passengers increased on the company’s routes between Finland and Estonia and Estonia and Sweden, but decreased on the routes between Finland and Sweden, where a smaller number of ships operated compared to the previous year.

In 2023, a total of 840,881 passenger vehicles were transported on all the company’s routes, which was an increase of 2.6 percent compared to the previous year (819,229 passenger vehicles in 2022).

Despite an increasing number of cars, there was a 20.9 per cent decrease in freight traffic compared to the previous year. Down from 409,769 cargo units in 2022 to 323,990 in 2023.

“The passenger numbers for 2023 indicate a slow and steady recovery. Some of our ships are still leased outside the company, so we did not expect a larger increase in the number of passengers. The prevailing global security and economic situation makes people cautious about consumption and the demand is not yet ready to increase capacity on our routes. Ship chartering has been a financially profitable solution for us. However, we are ready to act and react quickly to the increase in demand; an example of this is the addition of Victoria I to the Helsinki-Tallinn route in October of last year,” commented Paavo Nõgene the Tallink Grupp CEO.

“The launch of our newest ship, MyStar, on the Helsinki-Tallinn route a little over a year ago was one of the most positive things of the year for us. MyStar has proven to be exactly what we needed to get both our new and old customers back on track after the challenging corona years,” added Nõgene.

“In 2024, we will continue to build steady growth, focus on improvements in cargo transportation and continue on the stable course we set in 2023. As always, Tallink continues to work hard to ensure vital transport connections for people and goods between Finland and Estonia, Finland and Sweden and Estonia and Sweden, even during the current challenging economic situation. Tallink Silja Line’s ships and crews are waiting for both former and new customers on our ships,” concluded Nõgene.
