Estonia saw 26% more tourists in July

According to Statistics Estonia, in July 2022, Estonian accommodation establishments served over 479,000 tourists, which is 26 per cent more than in July last year. Although the number of domestic tourists fell, the number of foreign tourists increased dramatically.

Over 229,000 foreign and nearly 250,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in July. “There were 169 per cent more foreign tourists than in July 2021. However, the number of foreign tourists was still 30 per cent smaller than in July 2019 before the pandemic. The number of domestic tourists grew fast in the two previous years, but in July 2022 there was a 16 per cent decrease year on year,” explained Helga Laurmaa, an analyst at Statistics Estonia.

Compared to July 2021, there was an increase in the number of tourists from European countries as well as from countries outside of Europe. More precisely, 52 per cent of all foreign tourists (118,000) came from Finland. There were about 22,000 tourists from Latvia, 14,000 tourists from Germany and 8,000 tourists from Lithuania.

68 per cent of the foreign tourists were accommodated in Harjumaa, followed by Pärnumaa (13 per cent), Tartumaa (6 per cent) and Saaremaa (5 per cent). Foreign tourists spent a total of 440,000 nights in Estonia in July.

For domestic tourists, the largest share (19 per cent) were accommodated in Harjumaa. 17 per cent of domestic tourists stayed overnight in Pärnumaa and 10 per cent in Saaremaa, while Tartumaa and Ida-Virumaa each accommodated 9 per cent of domestic tourists. Domestic tourists spent a total of 459,000 nights in accommodation establishments.

In July, the average cost of a night in accommodation was 43 euros per person, which is two euros more than in June. The average cost of an overnight stay per person was 51 euros in Harjumaa, 47 euros in Tartumaa, 45 euros in Pärnumaa, 41 euros in Saaremaa, and 37 euros in Ida-Virumaa.
