At least 21 top 100 players will compete at the WTA Tallinn Open

Organisers of the first WTA tennis tournament in Estonia have announced 21 players who will compete in the 32 woman tournament. All of these announced players, including Estonians Anett Kontaveit (WTA 2) and Kaia Kanepi (WTA 34) are in the world’s top 75.

“Looking at the list of players, one can only rejoice at how amazingly high the level of athletes who will take part in the WTA tournament, held for the first time in Estonia. Among the participants there is an Olympic champion and Grand Slam winners in both singles and doubles,” said Allar Hint, director of the Tallinn Open WTA 250 tournament. “The Tallinn Open tournament will give fans of this sport an exceptional opportunity to see our tennis stars and other titled tennis players on the court.”

The Tallinn Open WTA 250 tournament will feature Swiss Olympic winner Belinda Bencic (WTA 13), Brazilian No. 1 Beatriz Haddad Maia (WTA 15), Latvian No. 1 Jelena Ostapenko (WTA 16) who won the French Open and Madison Keys from the United States (WTA 20), who played in the final of the US Open in 2017.

In addition, another former French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova (WTA 23) and Czech compatriot Tereza Martincova (WTA 71) will compete in the tournament. Along with this year’s Wimbledon winner Jelena Rõbakina (WTA 25) from Kazakhstan and Jil Teichmann (WTA 30) from Switzerland.

In total 32 players will compete in the tournament that will take place from September 24 to October 2. Four more players in addition to the already known 21 will be allowed to join on Wild Card passes, and six will get to the tournament after passing through the pre-tournament qualification competition. One player will be able to take part in the tournament thanks to a so-called special exempt.
