In November 1988, the Supreme Council of the Estonian Soviet Republic declared Estonia a sovereign state. In May 1990, part of the 1938 constitution was reinstated and the country’s name was changed to the Republic of Estonia.
Estonia declared its independence fully restored on August 20, 1991. One important reason for this was that there was a failed coup attempt in the Soviet Union, which led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The day is known in Estonia as re-independence day.
