Elisa launches the first new generation 5G network in Estonia

Yesterday, entertainment and communication service provider Elisa launched the first 5G network in Estonia operating on a real 5G frequency. Initially, Elisa will offer users of this network ultra-fast home and office Internet in the regions with the highest Internet consumption, before rolling it out to all users in the autumn.

“Elisa won the auction of the first 5G license and is now free to showcase the innovative capabilities of the 5G Internet for businesses and consumers. The future promises to be very interesting because technological progress stimulates innovation. High-speed Internet will bring solutions to various areas of our lives, opening up fresh economic opportunities and creating additional benefits for many social groups. 5G will be an energetic impetus for other technological breakthroughs with many benefits,” explained Andres Sutt, Minister for Enterprise and Information Technology.

Elisa intends to offer packages with data rates up to 500 Mbps to private and business customers along with 5G routers for unprecedented indoor Wi-Fi internet.

“At the beginning, 5G internet will be available to Elisa customers with home and office connections, as ultra-high-speed Internet is most useful for such customers. Smartphones from some manufacturers already support 5G, and many other manufacturers have begun testing this functionality. We want every device to function perfectly on the Elisa 5G network. That’s why support for Apple and Samsung smart devices will be available on Elisa’s 5G network this autumn, and then our 5G smart packages will be available for sale,” said Mailiis Ploomann, head of Elisa Private Customers.

Elisa also announced 5G packages for its private and business customers. The most inexpensive package for private clients will be 17.99 euros, and for business clients, 21 euros.

According to mobile Internet measurements carried out by the Consumer Protection and Technical Supervision Board published in mid-June, the Elisa network in Estonia showed the highest average data speeds, consistently over 100 Mbps.

“The long-awaited moment has come. The first new generation 5G mobile communication network has finally opened in Estonia,” said Andrus Hiiepuu, CEO of Elisa Eesti.
