More than 35,000 Ukrainian refugees now in Estonia

As of Sunday, May 8, 36,672 Ukrainians have crossed the border into Estonia with an intention to stay. This is equivalent to 2.5 per cent of Estonia’s population.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, 36,672 Ukrainians have entered Estonia with an intention to stay. This exact number coming from the Police and Border Guard, who are counting new arrivals from Ukraine when they enter the country.

Of those, 24,076 have already registered for temporary protection. The Temporary Protection Directive, which was introduced by the EU, makes it possible for persons from non-EU countries to receive quick and effective assistance. This includes the right to medical care, suitable education, accommodation, banking, temporary right of residence for up to 3 years, and the possibility to work.

With Estonia’s small population of just 1.33 million, this influx means that Ukrainian refugees now make up 2.5 per cent of Estonia’s population. On average, over the past month, around 300 Ukrainians have entered Estonia each day with an intention to stay. Most are staying with family and friends.
