Online exhibition showcasing 100 years of Estonia statistics launched

Statistics Estonia has launched an online exhibition titled “100 Years of Estonian Statistics”, which showcases Statistics Estonia’s centennial year, from the first population data collected 101 years ago, through the Soviet period and into today.

At its peak, the Estonian statistical office employed more than 16,000 people in 1922. During the period of Stalin’s reign, statistics were replaced with socialist economic ideas, and for that reason, it was impossible to get a full picture of what was truly happening in the economy. During the Soviet period, what statistics were given were often manipulated. The exhibition also covers the cleanup of statistics after Estonia regained independence 1991.

According to curator Olev Liivik, the history of Estonian statistics has been colourful and “should be studied as if with a microscope, not a telescope, which is unfortunately what happens to the study of many areas and phenomena today.”

The exhibition, which can be enjoyed in both Estonian and English, is available online here.
