Tartu Attracted More Tourists in June

A total of 25,959 tourists stayed overnight in Tartu in June 2025, which is 9.94% more than the same time last year. The number of overnight stays increased by 5.73%. Notably, the number of tourists from Lithuania doubled.

Of the tourists in June, 13,628 were foreigners, and 12,331 were Estonians. The number of foreign visitors was 14% higher than in June last year, with their overnight stays increasing by nearly 24%. The most foreign tourists came from Finland (3763), Latvia (2132), Germany (1843), Lithuania (1312), and the United Kingdom (517). The number of Lithuanian tourists rose from 552 to 1312 over the year.

In June, 60% of the rooms in Tartu’s accommodation facilities were in use, which is the second highest in Estonia after Tallinn (67%). The average price for one night in Tartu was €44, compared to €67 in Tallinn.

“The doubling of Lithuanian tourists in Tartu shows that persistent work in the Baltic markets is paying off. Along with our partners, we have promoted Tartu in the Lithuanian media’s summer stories, supported the visibility of the Tartu–Riga–Vilnius train connection, and gained extra attention thanks to the AHHAA Science Centre campaigns in Latvia and Lithuania. Such cooperation increases awareness and attracts tourists from farther away,” says Annika Ojasaar, Head of Tourism in Tartu.

In Southern Estonia, a total of 54,367 tourists visited in June, which is 2.47% more than last year. The number of foreign visitors grew by 9.5%, and overnight stays by 15.3%, while the number of Estonian tourists decreased slightly.

The statistics are based on data from Statistics Estonia, published with a two-month delay, covering only officially registered accommodation establishments, of which there were 37 in June. Additionally, there are about 630 temporary accommodations in the city that are not included in the statistics.
