With the uncharacteristically warm weather at the moment. The Kolkja Sled and Onion Route Winter Festival this Sunday (March 3), may well be a final farewell to the coldest season of the year. At this year’s event, as well as the usual sledding competitions, local foods and activities for children will be on offer.
Along the shores of Peipsi Lake in eastern Estonia, kick sleds have been a popular way to get around for generations. Therefore, it is no surprise that people also race with them.
This Sunday, March 3, will see possibly the biggest races of the year in the village of Kolkja in Tartumaa. Where adults as well as children will be able to compete. Don’t worry if you don’t own a sled as one can also be rented on race day.
As well as the action-packed races there will be a winter feast area filled with delicious local food. This year, the event also introduces a children’s area, catering to both the little ones and older kids.
If you or your loved ones want to take part in the races it is recommended to register in advance. Attending the event is free of charge, however, taking part in races has a fee for non-locals.
