Restoration of Independence Day Events

Estonia’s restoration of independence began officially with the strike of a gavel on 20 August, 1991. The history of this momentous event has ties that extend much farther into the past, and the event itself was not without its trials and tribulations, but 20 August is officially recognised as the Day of Restoration of the Republic of Estonia, and it continues as a national holiday 34 years later. There are several events around the city to mark this occasion.
Why not start the day off at the Estonian History Museum in Maarjamäe? A family-friendly event will have lots of activities for children, while adults can enjoy several performances, food, and a bit of history inside the beautifully restored buildings.
Or alternatively, head to the TV Tower, which the day after that fateful day had been blockaded by Soviet forces, temporarily interrupting public broadcasts of television. Fortunately, a peaceful end was negotiated. On 20 August of this year, visitors can see for themselves what exactly transpired, and also enjoy a day full of concerts, food, and family-friendly activities.
There will also be several other concerts around the city, including on 20 August Square during the afternoon. Read more here.
