Otepää World Cup Stage

Winter sports fans all know where Otepää is, and what it’s famous for: skiing! This year the Viessmann FIS Nordic Combined World Cup Stage will take place in Otepää’s famed Tehvandi Sports Centre from 9–11 January. One-day and three-day passes for spectators are now on sale here.

The FIS, or International Ski and Snowboard Federation, annually holds several stages, and the Otepää stage will be sure to feature top athletes from around the world. Events officially begin on 8 January, with the Men’s and Women’s Provisional Round of ski jumping. The main World Cup stage begins the following day, however, with the Men’s and Women’s Individual Mass Starts of ten and five kilometres, respectively.

10 January will see the Men’s and Women’s Individual Gundersen, again ten and five kilometres, respectively. This of course features the Gundersen method of staggered starts and ski jumping. 11 January will feature Men’s and Women’s Individual Compact races of the same distances. This method produces tighter races with closer finishing times.

Spectators don’t have to just spectate, however. Otepää is known as Estonia’s winter capital, meaning that skiing—both cross-country and downhill—are available to the public in many areas in and immediately around the city, which is only 45 minutes southwest of Tartu.

Evening programmes include one of Estonia’s top singers, Karl-Erik Taukar on Friday, and the wildly popular nublu on Saturday, both in the Tehvandi Sports Centre.
