Guitar Virtuosos in Tallinn

Can the measure of skillful guitar playing and an unforgettable concert evening be determined by how many necks the artist’s instrument has, whether their stage gear includes a looper, or how many guitarists appear before the audience at once? As a “something for everyone” solution, we offer three very different guitar concert evenings falling in February and March. Based on the videos, we dare expect wow-experiences.

On Valentine’s Day, 14 February, Finnish musician Petteri Sariola takes the stage in the Kumu Art Museum’s auditorium, performing on an acoustic guitar while also taking on the roles of bassist and drummer. Even in 2009, Finnish media reported on the young fifth-generation musician who started playing guitar at the age of seven and wanted to become a rock guitarist, but at the time failed to gather a band around him. The percussive fingerstyle virtuoso has released five solo albums during his career, the most recent “Voyager” seeing daylight last September. Tickets for the Valentine’s Day concert in Tallinn can be purchased here.

Exactly two weeks later, on 28 February, the same auditorium stage welcomes the Italian acoustic guitar virtuoso Luca Stricagnoli, whose music videos have collected over 200 million views worldwide. Music magazines such as NME and Guitar World have called him a phenomenon, and no wonder! The man plays several instruments simultaneously, uses bows and various mechanical capo devices, and has even developed his own special creations, such as the three-necked reversed triple-neck guitar, and the reversed slide-neck guitar.

However, if you believe that “more is more”, then buy a ticket here for the music evening on Saturday, 28 March, at Alexela Concert Hall. That’s when the guitar quartet 40 Fingers—Matteo Brenci, Emanuele Grafitti, Enrico Maria Milanesi, and Andrea Vittori—arrive from Italy to perform their own material and live interpretations of the world’s most famous rock and pop songs. The musicians of Queen have reportedly shared the quartet’s guitar performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody” on their own pages, and the group has been joined onstage, at their own initiative, by both Andrea Bocelli and The Police’s guitarist Andy Summers. The quartet’s repertoire also includes many arrangements of theme songs from films and TV series.
