Estonian passport: #1 most sustainainable in the world

Estonia has achieved a remarkable milestone by being ranked #1 out of 180 countries in the newly released Sustainable Passport Index. This index evaluates passports based on their countries’ environmental policies, showcasing how each nation performs in terms of sustainability and environmentalism.

Estonia’s top position is largely attributed to its outstanding performance across several key environmental metrics. The country leads with a score of 83.9 in climate change policy, reflecting its robust efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable energy practices. In terms of environmental health, Estonia excels with a score of 91.5, thanks to its superior air and water quality, effective waste management systems, and minimal heavy metal exposure. Additionally, Estonia achieved a score of 87.3 in ecosystem vitality, demonstrating its commitment to preserving biodiversity, maintaining healthy forests and fisheries, and managing agricultural practices sustainably.

Estonia has also made significant strides in renewable energy adoption, with over 30 per cent of its energy consumption coming from renewable sources. This progress has further bolstered its top ranking. The country has successfully reduced its carbon emissions intensity by 20 per cent over the past decade, underscoring its ongoing commitment to combating climate change.

This recognition highlights Estonia’s leadership in environmental sustainability and sets a benchmark for other countries. It reflects the combined efforts of Estonian policymakers, environmental organisations, and citizens dedicated to fostering a more sustainable future.
