The statistics published by Statistics Estonia on the number of tourists in March were commented on in several newspapers. According to the news, the number of Finnish tourists was only 36,000, a 19% decrease compared to last year.
However, many have failed to take into account that Easter was in March last year, and this year it was later than usual, at the end of April. In addition, an increasing number of Finnish tourists are staying overnight in places other than those taken into account for the above statistics, i.e. hotels. What’s more, Tallinn is also visited by many day tourists.
The statistics of the Port of Tallinn show that almost exactly 100,000 Finns visited Estonia in March. Last year, there were about 25,000 more visitors. According to statistics published by the Estonian Central Bank two weeks ago, 317,000 Finns visited Estonia during the first quarter, of which 137,000 were day tourists, and 180,000 were overnight visitors. The total number for the three months decreased by 2% compared to the previous year.
The figures for April have not yet been published, but you won’t have to be a fortune teller to say that the number of Finnish tourists was clearly higher than last year.
