Documentary on tennis star Anett Kontaveit to premiere on September 24

The documentary film Anett, will offer an in-depth look at the career of Estonian tennis player Anett Kontaveit. Kontaveit, who achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 2, is celebrated for her significant accomplishments in tennis, including six WTA tournament victories and notable performances at major events such as the 2020 Australian Open quarterfinals and the 2021 WTA Finals in Mexico.

The film Anett explores both the triumphs and challenges of Kontaveit’s career, culminating in her decision to retire from professional tennis in the summer of 2023. This documentary provides a rare glimpse into the life of a top athlete, capturing the pivotal moments leading to Kontaveit’s retirement. According to director Kaupo Kruusiauk, the film’s unique angle emerged from the timing of the retirement announcement, which occurred during the filming process. Kruusiauk, known for his work on various successful documentaries, highlights that the film captures not only the public success but also the personal struggles and sacrifices behind the scenes.

Kruusiauk’s approach in Anett is to delve into the less visible aspects of a sports career, revealing the intense dedication, psychological challenges, and isolation that often accompany high achievement. The documentary also features key figures in Kontaveit’s life, including her mother and first coach Ülle Milk, long-time supporter and manager Tarmo Sumberg, and her final coach Torben Beltz.

The premiere of Anett will be held in Tallinn, with the film set for general release in Estonian cinemas on September 27. The documentary’s trailer can be watched at Vimeo.
