A house that messes with the senses
Text and photo Timo Huttunen
In addition to the fact that the house is upside down, it is also slightly tilted.
The Upside Down House (Tagurpidi Maja in Estonian), which is located right next to the Estonian National Museum is also one of Tartu’s most visited tourist attractions. The house is literally on its roof. You enter the building through the roof and on the “second floor” you can find the real first floor of the house.
All the rooms in the house are also carefully decorated, meaning the furniture hangs from what appears to be ceiling, but is actually the floor.
Visiting the building is a confusing experience, because in addition to the fact that the house is upside down, it is also tilted, which really puts your sense of balance to the test. Judging by the laughter of the families and groups that were in the house at the same time as us, they all seemed to be enjoying their time in the proverbial “upside down”.
You can learn more about the Upside Down House, including opening times and tickets, on their website.
