New playground opens in Tallinn’s Old Town

If you would like to find a nice playground for your children during your holiday in Tallinn, there’s one right next to the park-side wall of the Old Town. The Tornide väljak playground, located next to Suurtüki Street, has reopened after a thorough renovation.

“The playground now has a medieval theme, and Tallinn’s coat of arms is also featured, which is reminiscent of the Danish flag. I hope this helps children remember that Tallinn was once called “Danish City”. In 1219, during the Battle of Lyndanisse, the Danish Dannebrog flag fell from the sky,” says Tallinn Deputy Mayor Pärtel-Peeter Pere. True or false? We can only speculate, but at least it gets the imagination going, just like a proper playground should.

The playground is divided into two different areas: a more active zone, and a quieter one. On the active side, children can climb, swing, and spin on a carousel. The centrepiece of the area is a wooden climbing frame resembling a medieval castle, designed especially for the Tornide väljak playground. The quieter area has a designated area for sand play and a music pavilion, both of which provide a comfortable environment for playing creatively. The playground is designed to be accessible so children with limited mobility can also play games.

Next to the playground, there is a chess area that offers the opportunity for a quiet game, as well as a sports field with three balance beams of different levels, separate areas for fitness and ball games, and versatile outdoor fitness equipment, some of which is also designed for users with reduced mobility.

“The renovated playground and sports field serves visitors of all ages and interests, offering activities for children, young people, and adults. Although the style of the field is reminiscent of the Middle Ages and blends beautifully into the Old Town environment, the design has focused on modern safety requirements and environmental friendliness,” emphasises Sander Andla, Director of the Tallinn City Centre District.
