5-day long student jazz festival begins today

Today, March 5, sees the beginning of the five-day-long student jazz festival Tudengijazz (TUJA). The festival, which is in its 42nd year, has seen many talented European and Estonian acts grace its stage, including the likes of Kadri Voorand, Jaak Sooäär, and Rita Ray

The first Tudengijazz festival took place in 1982, at a time when jazz music was publicly prohibited by the Soviet authorities. The fact that the young students were able to turn their dream of a festival into reality, holds historical significance as a precursor to Estonia’s Singing Revolution

This year’s festival will begin this evening at Philly Joe’s in Tallinn with a seminar about music publishing, branding, and marketing, which will be followed by a jam session. The whole evening is free of charge to attend.

Throughout the rest of the week, there will be concerts all around Estonia, including at the Tartu University café on March 6, Viljandi Conservatory on March 7, Wunderbaar in Pärnu on March 8, as well as at Phily Joe’s in Tallinn on both March 8 and 9.

You can find out more about the acts at each concert and buy tickets via the official TUJA website.
