During the Soviet era, meat skewers, or <i>\u0161a\u0161l\u00f5k<\/i>, were particularly popular. Today, raw sausages, or <i>toorvorstid<\/i>, have established a strong position alongside traditional grill sausages. At present, around one hundred representatives of the two aforementioned product groups are available in shops. For the test, we selected new products available at Prisma in Tallinn, as well as sausages from as many different producers as possible. Marketers believe in flavouring with cheese this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The test therefore included only some of the Estonian sausages available that are suitable for grilling. More products can be found in the chilled sections of supermarkets. Nine Estonians and Finns of different ages took part in the test. The southern Estonian Karni brand performed particularly well in the test. It is produced by the Estonian company Arke Lihat\u00f6\u00f6stus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Estonia\u2019s largest meat-processing plants are Rakvere, Atria, N\u00f5o, and Tallegg. The latter is known for its chicken products, but its range also includes a few grill sausages. At present, Rakvere\u2019s range of grill and raw sausages includes 11 different products, while Atria\u2019s plants, Maks&amp;Moorits and W\u00f5ro, offer 15 different varieties, and N\u00f5o\u2019s range contains 12 grill and raw sausages. Rannarootsi Lihat\u00f6\u00f6stus also has a notable selection: 15 different sausage products have been prepared for the summer market. Linnam\u00e4e Lihat\u00f6\u00f6stus, which specialises in game meat, offers 14 different grill and raw sausages.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Additives in sausages<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">For those interested in sausage additives, it is worth knowing that most contain sodium nitrite, or the additive E250. It is not recommended, particularly for small children. Among the products without E250 are Rakvere\u2019s Lihakas \u0161a\u0161l\u00f5kivorstid, or \u201cmeaty meat skewer sausages\u201d, Laste toorvorstid ploomidega or \u201cchildren\u2019s raw sausages with plums\u201d and \u0160a\u0161l\u00f5ki toorvorstid or \u201cmeat skewer raw sausages\u201d; Maks&amp;Moorits Laste toorvorstikesed or \u201cchildren\u2019s raw sausages\u201d; N\u00f5o Laste toorvorstid juustuga or \u201cchildren\u2019s raw sausages with cheese\u201d, and Treski V\u00e4kkev toorvorst, or \u201craw sausage\u201d; Tallegg\u2019s \u0160a\u0161l\u00f5kivorstid broilerilihast or \u201cmeat skewer sausages from broiler chicken\u201d, and Merevaigu toorvorstid broilerilihast or \u201craw sausages from broiler chicken\u201d.
