{"id":158472,"date":"2026-05-17T05:33:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T02:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/balticguide.ee\/?p=158472"},"modified":"2026-05-15T12:52:55","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T09:52:55","slug":"setomaas-summer-is-full-of-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/balticguide.ee\/en\/setomaas-summer-is-full-of-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Setomaa\u2019s Summer Is Full of Events"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In the southeastern corner of Estonia, south of Tartu and V\u00f5ru and close to the Latvian and Russian borders, lies <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/visitestonia.com\/en\/where-to-go\/setomaa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">Setomaa<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a culturally very fascinating region. Every year, on the first Saturday of August, the area symbolically declares itself the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/visitsetomaa.ee\/en\/kingdom-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">Kingdom of Setomaa<\/span><\/a><\/span> for one day, separate from the Republic of Estonia. It is ruled by the earthly messenger of the mythical supreme deity Peko, the <i>\u00fclemsootska<\/i>, a cultural ambassador elected from among the Seto people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The day is major for folk heritage and is a massive public celebration of the Seto people, open to visitors from near and far. The regional cultural center has compiled a calendar of more than 50 festivals, Midsummer celebrations, traditional food events, concerts, and folklore events, which can be viewed in a single overview in this <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=1377382544423740\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">Facebook post<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The list actually begins with last night\u2019s Museum Night, but until 29 May there is an exhibition at the V\u00e4rska Cultural House as part of the 32nd Seto lace-making days, featuring lace-decorated headscarves worn by Seto women. On 24 May, a large summer market will be held in the yard of the same cultural house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In June, various Midsummer and village celebrations naturally take place in Setomaa\u2019s villages. Due to historical differences between the Gregorian and Orthodox calendars, some Midsummer bonfires can still be attended in early July, the latest even on 10 July in V\u00f5\u00f5psu village. On the same weekend, 3\u20135 July, the \u201cNoorte Molutamise Festival\u201d in the cultural village of Uusvada may sound like youth \u201cidling around,\u201d but it likely refers to a relaxed, chill-style music event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">We already covered the Ostrova Festival on 17\u201318 July in the summer festival article, but other July highlights include the Obinitsa Village Day on 11 July, a public triathlon event at the V\u00e4rska spa area on the same day, and at the end of the month in Luhamaa the start of a series of seven \u201cSeto Odyssey\u201d rock musical performances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In August, following Kingdom Day, the Treski Fest will take place on 7\u20139 August, and on 8\u20139 August home caf\u00e9s across Setomaa will open their doors for Seto Kostip\u00e4ev.
